The Death of LimeWire

Yup...it's official....At the end of this year, the embattled LimeWire service will be shutdown completely.

The company issued a statement today confirming that it will cease all business operations as of 2011: “Given our current situation, plans to bring our separate, legal music service to market, have been canceled. The beginning of 2011 will mark the closing of LimeWire’s New York office and cessation of business by LimeWire.

The end of LimeWire was perhaps inevitable ever since a federal judge ruled in favor of the RIAA’s lawsuit against it. Despite the May ruling, LimeWire contended it would continue to develop what it called an “unmatched” unlimited music download service, and that it was negotiating with major labels to bring that service to reality.

But the legal woes just kept mounting. In June, a group of publishers filed their own suit against the company. And In October, the judge presiding over the RIAA case slapped a permanent injunction against the company forcing it to shut down its P2P operations.

Viacom Says YouTube Ruling Will ‘Completely Destroy’ Copyright

Viacom appealed Friday its unsuccessful $1 billion copyright lawsuit against Google’s YouTube in a case testing the depths of copyright-infringement protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998.

Viacom, on behalf of its MTV, Comedy Central, Black Entertainment Television, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon units, is seeking to overturn a June ruling that, if it survives, is a boon for internet freedom — and a decision that would make it more difficult for rights holders to protect their works.

Verizon LTE Speed Test: Insanely Fast via Gizmodo

Verizon's first LTE dongle is startlingly large. But not as startling as the speed.

These results are spot tests from all across the country: New York (Gizmodo & Engadget), Seattle (MSNBC.com), Philadelphia (GigaOM), Arizona (SlashGear) and Boston (NetworkWorld). And they paint a pretty remarkable picture. Most of the "slow" results—around 7-9Mbps downstream—are with a mere two bars of signal.

TED Talks: Tod Machover & Dan Ellsey - Releasing the music in your head

Tod Machover of MIT's Media Lab is devoted to extending musical expression for everyone -- from virtuosi to amateurs, and in the most diverse forms -- from opera to videogames (Guitar Hero grew out of his group). At TED2008 he talks about what's coming next, from new tools for music creativity to the world's first robotic opera. Machover then introduces Dan Ellsey, a young man with cerebral palsy who has found his voice through music created and performed using Media Lab technologies. Ellsey plays his "My Eagle Song" in a soaring rendition that underscores music's power to heal, to communicate, and to inspire.

TED Talks: Robert Gupta-Music is medicine, music is sanity
